Buchty a Loutky
(Prague/Czech Republic)
The Story Of A Real Man

Company
Buchty a Loutky, in existence since 1991, appeared at the inaugural UNIDRAM festival ten years ago and are here once again this year. Now as then, they oscillate between theatre and puppetry and have continued to receive awards at international figure theatre festivals for their unconventional treatment of authors and texts.

Performance
There is a fierce wind blowing, aeroplane propellers rotate slower than the hands of clock, and the ejector seats are usually too slow to engage. In spite of the stage blood bucketing down from the sky, tattered parachutes flap about happily in the breeze. In accompaniment to the crash-landing, an accordion wheezes out Russian tunes and heroic marching songs. It is the celebration of none other than Alexej Meresjew, hero of the Soviet Union, who has risen from the dead. The story of the legless pilot from the Great Patriotic War might tend to dangle from silken marionette cords, but look: Meresjew is flying up to greet the sun for us! The performance is as self-mocking, as absurd and anarchic as it would be if Daniil Charms had attempted to write a serious play for the Augsburg puppet theatre in Czech.
