NANOHACH & Jan Komárek (Prague/Czech Republic)
Crime and Punishment
Dance theatre with live music based on F.M. Dostoyevsky
German premiere

Company
NANOHACH is a platform for organising and realising international plays and dance pieces, as well as projects in public spaces. The members are simultaneously actors and producers. The Czech ensemble already performed at UNIDRAM in 2008. Jan Komárek, born in Prague, is an actor, director, lighting designer, puppeteer and clown. After living in France and Canada for many years, he returned to Prague in 2001 and has since been active in the city’s independent dance scene.

Performance
The floor is covered in a fine layer of dust and bisected by a white blanket. Along it walks the murderer Raskolnikov in a pilgrimage of penitence. The rhythmic whispering of three singers – reminiscent of the witches from Macbeth – is followed by prophecies, warnings and accusations. From the deed to his confession, he is pursued by a capella chants, dirges and improvised vocal sounds. Piano and percussion intensify his inner turmoil. The demons multiply, but there is no salvation. Crime and Punishment, part dance performance, part oratorio and part experimental mini-opera, gains its power from the intense physicality of the solo dancer, the precise musical compositions and a surprising ending.
