Mariahilff (Berlin/Germany)
„St. Cecilia, or The Power of Music“
Staged concert based on a work by Heinrich von Kleist

Company
The band Mariahilff is also home to the prominent German actor, Lars Rudolph. Die Zeit described their first album in 2009 as ‘a wild mixture of styles, genres and references’ resulting in the band’s ‘entire fantastic craziness’. Mariahilff already performed at UNIDRAM in 2011.

Performance
The end of the 16th century: four Dutch brothers plan to raid the St. Cecilia convent in Aachen on the feast of Corpus Christi. During the mass, however, they are evangelised by the ‘power of the music’. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, dissuades them from their plan through a complete emotional transformation. Old organs, glockenspiels, mandolins and trumpets – distorted, dark and eerie. A high-pitched male voice and a singing fraternity sound as though they are more at home in a haze of alcohol than frankincense. Where the language is biblical on the distant horizon and the history of the Iconoclasts rages, the soundtrack to Kleist’s novella features canastoria, psychedelia, folk and
avant-garde noise while moving between magic, religion and belief in miracles.
