Popcorn Machine

My!Laika

France
Circensian Theatre, 55 minutes, minor dialogue in different languages

A battered old honkytonk piano, with a noisy ventilator perched atop, a suitcase full of dismantled mannequin body parts, a chandelier, an acrobatic bicycle and a trapeze hanging menacingly empty over the centre of the stage. Four twisted and dishevelled figures vie for attention with increasingly absurd ideas and ever more outlandish actions. Hard to tame, rough, desperate, merciless and ambivalent. As if Frank Zappa, Jackie Chan, Kurt Schwitters and the Ramones had got together for a wrestling match, this punk-pop-art circus lurches back and forth between doomsday cabaret, domestic apocalypse and farcical cosmic humour.

My!Laika is a European group of artists, founded in 2009. Inspired by Dadaism, the company left the terra firma of classic acrobatics behind several years ago, graduating to combinations of absurdist theatre and wild circus cabaret, like characters from a Fellini film or a Kafka novel. The culmination of these genre-bending works is award-winning circus spectacles that explore the vast realms between theatre, music and the visual arts with great intensity and passion. Popcorn Machine, is a fast-paced, sensual spectacle full of contorted, symbolic imagery, brilliant artistry and surprising effects, wherein the ensemble combines live music with a new type of circus.
