Waiting Room

Farm in the Cave

Prague, Czech Republic
Physical Theatre

Company
Familiar to audiences from last year’s UNIDRAM, Farm in the Cave has again dedicated a production to the exploration and development of the potential of human expression. An essential source of inspiration is their research into forgotten manifestations of culture, an enquiry focusing on minorities and the margins of society.

Performance
Waiting Room is a transformation of time and space performed to the tenets of movement theatre; it sources from the memory of a place in provincial Slovakia: from the railway station of Zilina Zarincie from which the Slovakian Jews were deported to concentration camps in Poland. Centred around memory and remembrance, Waiting Room has no trace of melodrama about it; rather, it is relentlessly physical, pushing the actors to the precipice of exhaustion. The random miniatures and dream journeys of the passengers, the final minutes of their lives and personal tragedies are staged with expressiveness and vitality. The current form of the stage setting is largely independent of holocaust events.
It develops as a story of the space of the waiting room in a provincial train station in a far-removed corner of the world. It captures the dreams of the travellers minutes before they leave their former lives and lose themselves in the unknown, it portrays their personal tragedies and loneliness from the 1930s until the present day. Far from being passive or despairing, here bodies filled with power and a zest for life, with sensuality and vulnerability meet one another and revolt together against loneliness, parting and extermination.
