Making Sounds

A Performative Lecture

Artist
Max Bauer studied the art of soundmaking under Mel Kutbay at the Meloton Studios in Munich and has worked as a freelance foley artist ever since. He has collaborated on national and international productions in theatre, cinema, television and radio and worked for numerous directors such as Romuald Karmakar, Sönke Wortmann and Caroline Link.

Performance
The art of producing the right sound at the right time to accompany moving images in real time is a little bit like alchemy. Even today it is a skill that is passed down; the secrets of sound production are as fiercely guarded as magic tricks. Ranging from the advent of Foley in the era of silent movies through to the digital film and radio studio, Max Bauer gives an insight into the foley artist’s hundred-year-old box of tricks and composes a miniature audio play live for the eyes and ears of the audience.
