NetherlandsAn abandoned room, its interior draped with pieces of white fabric. Hidden underneath are strange mechanics and machinery: a wheelchair-driven cello with an engine could hardly be daintier or more graceful. A giant, rusty circular saw blade gongs away noisily to mischievously clattering dentures. Restlessly rotating dance shoes look for feet that fit. Objects, people and the same problems: if you no longer control your own life, you become dependent. Four musicians strike up a stubborn hymn to whatever may happen, while singing a comic, tender and bizarre memento mori.
BOT is a musical theatre quartet consisting of Geert Jonkers, Tomas Postema, Job van Gorkum and Doan Hendriks. Their instruments – which they refer to as sound machines – are homemade from seemingly worthless materials. The ensemble has developed an authentic style in which music, object theatre and mechanical sound-art merge in lively musical performances. Since their first appearance at the Oerol Festival 2009 with the production RAMKOERS, the group BOT is regularly on tour with their productions at home and abroad.
