Puppet Theatre with Live Music, 65 minutes, in French with German surtitles
Objects, shadows, puppets and projections, burlesque, poetic, archetypal and universal: La Manékine is an adaptation of a centuries-old story collected by the Grimm Brothers: The Girl Without Hands. The protagonists of this spooky fairy tale are the devil, a poor miller and his daughter, a fateful deal, and two severed hands. The puppet mistress and multi-instrumentalist spin out the story, oscillating between a brutal and bloody female initiation, resilience and the regaining of one’s freedom of action.
The French Compagnie La Pendue was founded in 2003 by Estelle Charlier and Romuald Collinet, two graduates of the École des Arts de la Marionette (ESNAM) in Charleville-Mézières. Their work promotes puppet theatre as a universal human symbol. Inspired by traditional string-puppet marionettes – especially the 400-year-old figure of Pulcinella – and using contemporary puppetry techniques, the ensemble succeeds in creating poetical worlds of unfolding magic, accompanied by the live music of Martin Kaspar Orkestar.
